"Crazing defect" means window replacement at new courthouse

An unusual situation in California illustrates how construction defects can impact virtually any aspect of the structure, whether residential or commercial. It involves downtown San Diego courthouse with bullet-resistant windows. The courthouse rose near the ocean more than a year late and at a cost of more than $550 million. Now, less than nine months after it opened, it needs a complete window replacement.

The bullet-resistant windows are being replaced because of extensive cracking. Taxpayers are not on the hook for the replacement cost, however. The cost of the construction defect repair work will apparently be borne by the contractor, according to a news article. The cost of the windows themselves is covered by the warranty.

What is a crazing defect?

The windows that are being replaced have "a crazing defect," according to a statement from a spokesperson for the state agency that oversees the California state court system. The defect is apparently due to "scratches in the interior surfaces of the bullet-resistant glass," which weren't up to quality standards.

The news article says the state agency didn't supply a cost estimate for the project.

Subpar materials can cause costly problems

The case reflects how poor-quality materials - whether windows, shingles, stucco or other components - can be a source of costly repairs (and burdensome litigation). Owners associations across Florida often find themselves confronting the logistical and financial burdens of construction defects. If you're in that boat, contact an attorney who understands this area of practice.
