It is always a tragedy when a household suffers an attack from a loved one or former member. Domestic violence is a problem too often in Florida, with arguments or disputes going too far in or around the household to the point that law enforcement must intervene.
Domestic violence can be a silent problem as well, with at least some victims unwilling or unable to report crimes against them. This is especially true with child victims, so family members must take responsibility if they observe questionable or abusive behavior.
A standoff in a generally quiet neighborhood in the south side of Jacksonville ended peacefully after 10 hours of police guarding a house where a woman was heard screaming at 5 a.m. on a Saturday. The perpetrator was arrested on several charges stemming from domestic violence and resisting law enforcement officers as they entered the home.
A woman and young child escaped the house before members of the sheriff's office SWAT team entered, only to be beaten back by the man inside. A negotiator secured the man's surrender later after the team had locked down the neighborhood as a precaution.
Victims of domestic abuse have several options to protect them against future violence or harassment by offenders. People can use evidence of danger to secure a restraining order against stalkers, abusers and threateners for their own safety or the safety of children involved.
An attorney can help deal with the civil and criminal sides of law regarding domestic abuse. Legal representation may ensure that a victim's perspective is represented in legal proceedings.
