Your instincts could lead to an unfair divorce

You're in court with your spouse, in the process of ending your marriage, and you don't agree on how to divide the assets or the time with the kids. Your spouse makes a proposal. Do you take it, even if you feel like it's not fair, or do you keep fighting for what is yours?

When you're just reading the question, the answer seems obvious: You keep fighting. In reality, though, experts warn that a lot of people accept unfair deals.

The problem, to some degree, is just your instincts. People always attempt to do what they can to stay away from things that cause them pain -- that goes for emotional and mental pain, as well as physical pain. If they can find things that instead bring pleasure, they chose them.

That's fine in many cases, but the issue is that a long-drawn out court battle may feel painful to you. Getting things resolved quickly may seem far more pleasurable.

Maybe you're sick of dealing with your spouse entirely. Maybe you just don't like the process. Either way, despite knowing that the deal is unfair, your instincts could tell you to take it. That ends the pain and allows you to move forward. Many people latch onto this and just accept whatever they can get -- something they may massively regret in the future, when the feelings have worn off and they understand everything that they gave up just to get done quickly.

Be sure you know what is and is not fair during your divorce. Take the time to understand your rights and how to fight for a fair resolution.
