Why you might be more likely to get divorced this month

People typically don't make the decision to divorce overnight. Oftentimes, the decision comes after other options and efforts have been exhausted, and when one or both people come to terms with the fact that their feelings have changed or that their marriage is broken beyond repair. There is no fixed rule for deciding when to file for divorce.

But according to recent research, there is a time of year when more people ultimately make this decision. The study, which comes from the University of Washington, found that there is a spike in divorce filings during the month of August.

The spike is being attributed to a lull in the "domestic ritual calendar." This month falls between two times of the year with a lot of social and family events and expectations: the summer and the holidays. This in-between time gives people considering divorce the opportunity to use the break in action to take action on their breakup.

This information is not to say that you should rush to decisions you don't feel prepared to make just because others may find it more convenient. However, it can provide some perspective on why you and/or your spouse may feel more anxious to file for divorce this month.

If you are in this situation, there are some things to take into account in terms of timing. First, like the decision to divorce, the process of getting divorced will not happen overnight. It can take weeks or -- more likely -- months. Further, there are always going to be drawbacks and benefits to filing for divorce at any time of year, so it is important to manage your expectations.

Because of all this, you will want to discuss your options and the approximate timeline of your divorce with an attorney sooner rather than later in order to capitalize on any benefits of filing now that might exist.

While August might mark the end of summer, it could also mark the beginning of a new chapter in your life if you are filing for divorce.
