How does paternity testing work in Florida?

If you are a man who is believed to be the father of a child or a mother looking to confirm the identity of your child's father, then you may very well have questions or concerns about paternity testing. For instance, you might be wondering how testing works and what it will entail.

If you are asked or ordered to take a paternity test, you should be prepared for what you will need to do and what the testing will consist of. Preparation can help you avoid mistakes and oversights, and it can alleviate the fear and anxiety you may be feeling.

To begin with, you should understand that there are many different types of paternity testing, including blood tests, over-the-counter tests and genetic tests.

However, if you are ordered by the courts to submit to testing, you will be required to make an appointment and have genetic testing conducted. Genetic testing is the most accurate type of paternity test.

At your appointment, they will confirm your identify and then swab the inside of your cheek to collect a DNA sample. This sample will be sent to an approved lab and compared to the child's sample. Within about three weeks, the results stating whether you are the genetic father will be available.

This is the only type of testing the Florida Department of Revenue will accept. They will not conduct blood tests, and any tests taken with over-the-counter tests or sent to unapproved labs will likely be met with challenges of legitimacy.

With all this in mind, readers should know that the process of testing itself should be quite painless. However, the emotional and legal toll it can take on parents and alleged parents can be much more agonizing. So while you may not need someone holding your hand during your testing appointment, you may find it quite reassuring and helpful to have an attorney by your side to help you through the legal elements of paternity
