What to consider before creating a parenting plan

The process of divorce involves a lot of thought and planning. Finances, assets, and children are major factors divorcing couples must consider.

Adjusting to a life of co-parenting can be tough. Florida requires divorcing couples with children to create a parenting plan. A parenting plan is beneficial for both parents and children.

What is a parenting plan?

A parenting plan is a legal document that organizes responsibilities. The plan usually covers daily tasks, finances, schedules and details regarding benefits and legal documents. Parenting plans can cover many aspects depending on the divorce and child's needs.

Here are a few things to consider before making a parenting plan:

  1. Finances
    • Who will claim the child as a dependent on tax forms?
    • How you will finance extracurricular activities?
    • How you will fund health expenses and insurance?
    • Do you live far away from the other parent? How will you handle transportation costs?
  2. Schedule
    • Who will provide transportation to extracurricular activities?
    • How will you share or arrange Holidays?
    • Where will you drop-off/pick-up of the children?
    • How will you handle school breaks?
  3. Communication
    • How will you and your ex talk to one another about the children and their schedules or other issues?
    • How will you relay the plan to the children?
    • How will you enforce rules for the children?
    • How will you and your ex negotiate unexpected decisions regarding the children?

When parents divorce, the whole family has to prepare for change. A parenting plan can help make the transition easier.
