Does an age gap make divorce more likely?

Your spouse is ten years older than you. You met just as you were finishing up college and married quickly. While the gap didn't seem too huge then, now you're wondering if it makes it more likely that you're going to get divorced.

Statistically speaking, it does. Though every marriage is different, the odds of a divorce go up as the gap in your ages increases.

Even if you're just a year apart -- what many people would consider "the same age" -- studies found that the odds of divorce go up by 3 percent, as opposed to those who actually the same age.

By five years apart, the odds of a split increase to 18 percent. That's a significant jump for people who still only have half a decade of difference between them.

But you're ten years apart. Those next five years are huge, as the odds of divorce more than double. You and your spouse are 39 percent more likely to split than two people who are the same age.

With a 20-year-age gap, you'd be 95 percent more likely to get divorced, meaning that you'd have almost double the chances of splitting up as compared to people who shared a birth year. If you and your spouse were 30 years apart, you'd be 172 percent more likely to divorce.

This isn't to say that marriage can't work with two adults of any age, but the statistics show that people are least likely to divorce when marrying a peer. If you and your spouse do decide to call it quits, it's crucial for you to know about all of the legal steps you'll need to take.
