Divorce can impact three generations

You may have heard people tell you that divorce is not just about you and your spouse, but that it's also about the kids. You have to think about them through every step in the process.

That's absolutely true. However, experts also note that you must remember that the split could realistically impact three generations.

For example, if you get divorced and then remarried, your child now could have three sets of grandparents to interact with -- your own, your ex's, and your new spouse's. They may all want to spend time with the child, and that makes scheduling tough.

That's especially true during the holiday season, said one man who was stuck in that situation. Not only are the holidays a time for family to get together, but they're generally very busy.

He said he'd learned two main things from the situation. First, he was conscious of the stress it could put on kids, parents and grandparents. Second, he said he had to be considerate of the child's needs and his or her own schedule.

As kids get older, this can become even more important. They may have their own schedules and events. They may have friends they want to see and less time to be dragged from home to home. It can grow very stressful.

This does not mean that there aren't solutions that can make it all work. It just means that you need to be conscious of the challenges you may face up front, and you need to take steps to come up with a parenting plan and a child custody agreement that addresses them.
