5 reasons people divorced in less than 12 months

You know about the divorce rate and how common divorce is. Even so, you're surprised to hear whenever someone splits up after less than a year.

What you'll find, though, is that the reasons often make a lot of sense. Below are five examples of why this may happen.

1. Cheating.

When a spouse cheats, it can tear a marriage apart in a hurry. There's no timetable for this. It could happen after just months.

2. Addiction.

Drugs and alcohol can sap the family finances and cause a lot of strife in a marriage. When use turns to addiction, it can put an end to a short marriage.

3. Changes.

Some people change dramatically after marriage. Just a few months in, one spouse may feel like he or she barely knows the other person -- and that the person he or she was dating before marriage is completely gone.

4. Being too young.

Some people rush into marriage without understanding what it will be like or what they want. They may quickly realize the mistake. Additionally, young people may still have a lot of changing and growing up to do, meaning they're no longer the same as they were when they got married.

5. Hidden issues.

For example, one woman said that her husband had thousands of dollars of debt when they got married. She didn't know anything about it until they tied the knot.

Sometimes, divorce strikes quickly. No matter how long you have been married, if you've now decided to call it off, be sure you know your legal rights.
