Yet another ugly allegation made in the Pitt-Jolie divorce

If you read the news or browse social media sites, chances are pretty good that you know that actor Brad Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie are getting divorced. Unsurprisingly, there have been numerous allegations and suspicions raised in the media as to the reason why they are splitting. Everything from drug abuse to infidelity has been named as a factor in the decision.

Most recently, however, there have been allegations made that Pitt was abusive toward at least one of the couple's children. While this terrible rumor has yet to be confirmed, it does serve as a reminder that this particular accusation has the potential to be far more destructive than people realize.

If a parent is accused of abuse, he or she could end up losing valuable time with their children. A parent with an abusive or violent history could end up without any custody or visitation rights. Any time that is awarded may need to be supervised.

Even if the allegations are ultimately dismissed or deemed wrongful, the accused parent could lose parenting time until that happens. For instance, if there are concerns about your child's safety during a divorce and your ex wrongfully accuses you of abuse, you may be prohibited from seeing your kids unless and until you are cleared of the allegations.

It should also be noted that accusations of abuse are not and should not be taken as tabloid fodder, though it can sometimes seem like these are harmless rumors when they involve celebrities. Domestic violence is a serious problem and must be taken as such. Too many spouses and children suffer as a result of abuse or the wrongful accusation of abuse, both of which can cause irreparable damage on parents and their kids.

If domestic violence allegations have come up or likely will come up in your divorce or child custody cases, it can be crucial that you take the situation seriously. The courts certainly will.
