Do 'quickie' marriages end with 'quickie' divorces?

Recently, it was reported that actor Johnny Depp and his wife of just 15 months, Amber Heard, are getting divorced. This story has raised questions similar to the one posed in this headline, especially among people in a situation like Depp and Heard's: those who are divorcing after a short marriage.

While there are things that you cannot avoid no matter how lengthy or brief your marriage was, there are certainly aspects of a divorce that can be avoided or at least made a little easier if your marriage did not last long.

Property division can be one of those things that can be much easier for people who are divorcing after a short marriage. There will typically be fewer marital assets to distribute, since there is less time for them to accumulate. Additionally, it may be easier to trace the source of assets and income back one year versus having to go back several years.

Child custody may also be an area where there is less to discuss. During a short marriage, you may not have had any children. If you entered the marriage with kids, it is less likely that a solid step-parent/step-child relationship warranting shared parenting will have had the time to develop.

Further, alimony or spousal maintenance may not need to be discussed when two people were not married long.

It is crucial to note that just because a marriage may have been brief does not mean these topics will always be unnecessary. In fact, many divorcing couples will deal with one or all of these issues regardless of how long a marriage lasted. Furthermore, the time it takes for a divorce to be finalized also depends heavily on whether you are resolving it outside of court or through litigation.

However, you may be relieved to learn that there very well could be some ways to make divorce a little easier if you were not married very long. Discussing your situation with an attorney can help you identify these areas and take the steps necessary to pursue a fair, efficient divorce and move on to the next chapter of your life.
